Swimming pools have been status symbols for years. It was considered a luxury and a glamorous addition to one’s home. Over the years they have become design elements. When I’m on an airplane, my eye always seems to focus on swimming pools. Early visits to Los Angeles, where I subsequently relocated from New York, inspired me to photograph a series of pools. I’ve been living with these photos for many years not knowing what to do with them, until now. Because of my background in illustration and design, I wanted to depict a certain lifestyle as well as the swimming pools themselves. This series of painings were created using my images, rendered in an abstract realistic style. Using vibrant colors and multiple layers of acrylic paint, I modify the color and lighting but rely on the original photos for texture, perspective and detail. As a result, each piece evolves and changes from the first stroke to the last.
