The 1950’s & 60’s were the halcyon days of the American Dream and the golden age of the roadside Motel. All you needed to do was look for a sign along the road declaring, “Vacancy”. Neon signs advertised their amenities like color TV, Air Conditioning & Swimming Pools.
These Motel signs are a blast from road trips of my past. Because of my background in Illustration and design, I wanted to depict a certain lifestyle as well as the Motel signs themselves. These series of paintings were created using my images rendered in an abstract realism style Using vibrant colors and multiple layers of acrylic paint, I modify the color and lighting but rely on the original photos for texture, perspective and detail.
